Fine Baroque violins : the choice of style

“Baroque violins” are used to perform repertoire from the early 16th century to the late 18th, according to the Historically Informed Practice (HIP), for which reason a player should ideally own a series of baroque violins: one for early Italian baroque, one for German baroque before Bach, one for the style of the late 17th – early 18th century.
I am thoroughly familiar with the specifications of the different types and know how to build them.

Historically Informed violin-making

A baroque violin implies a special philosophy, a particular approach of the making of string instruments. It is necessary to study a variety of primary sources in order to get acquainted with the tradition followed by the ancient makers.

For commissioned instruments, I discuss each aspect with the musician concerned on the drawing board. Each violin of the Baroque era was unique piece, and so are mine.

  • I just want to share with you how happy I am with the violin. This week I was in Tirol on a project. The concert was wonderful and then we made a recording. The violin is just amazing. No one has noticed that it is a newborn. They just talked about how wonderful it sounds and also how good it looks.
